Petitgrain essential oil comes from the bitter orange tree, botanically known as Citrus aurantium ssp. amara. This member of the Rutaceae family has been cultivated for centuries in regions with mild, sunny climates.

The bitter orange tree is particularly interesting in aromatherapy and perfumery because several parts of the same tree can be used to obtain different aromatic materials.

Distilling the leaves and young twigs produces Petitgrain essential oil. Its fragrance is green, fresh, slightly woody and subtly floral.

The highly fragrant white flowers of the same tree are used to produce the precious Neroli essential oil.

The peel of the fruit provides Bitter Orange essence. Three different parts of the same plant therefore produce three distinct aromatic materials with their own olfactory profiles.

The name “Petitgrain” is linked to the history of its production. In the past, small unripe fruits could be distilled alongside the leaves, their appearance suggesting small grains. Today, Petitgrain essential oil is mainly obtained from the leaves and young twigs.

Its aromatic composition is often characterised by the presence of linalyl acetate and linalool, two constituents that contribute to its soft, floral and balanced fragrance.

This aromatic signature helps explain its established place in blends focused on relaxation and emotional wellbeing. Petitgrain is now appreciated in both aromatherapy and perfumery.
