Compact Oregano (Origanum compactum) belongs to the Lamiaceae family, which includes many familiar aromatic plants such as Thyme, Mint, Lavender and Rosemary.

It is a relatively low-growing aromatic plant, generally reaching only a few tens of centimetres in height.

The name compactum refers directly to the appearance of its flowers: they are grouped into dense, compact inflorescences, often ranging from pink to purple.

Compact Oregano is especially associated with North Africa and Morocco, which explains the common name Moroccan Oregano.

Its aromatic leaves also have a traditional culinary role, continuing the long history of oregano species used in Mediterranean cooking and folk traditions.

The essential oil is obtained by steam distillation of the flowering aerial parts.

Its fragrance is especially distinctive: warm, herbaceous, spicy, powerful and slightly bitter. It immediately reflects the highly concentrated nature of this essential oil.

Its biochemical profile is notably characterised by aromatic compounds such as carvacrol and thymol. This composition helps explain both its longstanding reputation in aromatherapy and the particular precautions required when using it.

Today, Compact Oregano is mainly used in targeted aromatherapy routines associated with winter, natural defences, vitality and seasonal comfort.
